Think about indigenous toys/learning materials that are very famous from your State/ UT and share your ideas how you can use them in teaching learning of different concepts, skills etc..

  5. Odisha has a variety of wooden toys that have now modified into fancy wooden stationary to capture the fancy of young kids. That can be used to produce sounds and a tiny fans at the end to blow on. These improve hand eye coordination and stimulate the child's sense of vision.

Mostly these toys are made of clothes, wood and clay. They are easy to use for the little ones and abide with the culture and nearby surrounding area. The skills can be easily inculcated through making use of these toys in free and structured play as well as in the teaching pedagogy.

We use to play sitoliya which taught us team work, arranging stones from big to small, eye hand cordination for shots etc. I remember that during Ganesha utsav we use to make garlands this help us learn fine motor skills. We use to make sand castles, and utensils with sand and play with them all these activities actually enhanced our creativity, communication skills etc. Games and toys engage is in self learning.

  21. manchoppu saman (kitchen clay set)- can be used for Socio- Emotional development: children can also be trained to make the toys using potters clay. This also develops their fine motor skills, learn math through play, caring is sharing , peer learning, co-operative learning, team work can all be observed. As the toys are fragile, children will also learn to care and share.
    marapachhi bommai (traditional wooden dolls)- gross and fine motor skills and communication develops in this play.
    Tanjore doll (a roly- poly doll made of terracotta material)- curiosity, creative thinking, critical thinking, collaborative play and observational skills develop in this play.

    Specific vocabulary can be targeted and taught using toys. Children can learn new words in a fun way. By using kitchen set names of different utensils can be taught in different language and also eating and serving atticates can be taught.

  43. Toys are a very useful and powerful learning resource. As toys exploit child’s interest and curiosity, new concepts that require reinforcement can be taught using toys. Pre- primary children and children up to the final school years can be taught based on TBP. Math skills- counting, pre- number concepts- tall- short/ big- small/ near – far, more- less, patterns, seriation etc. number sense concepts- counting, addition, subtraction, sharing, halving, doubling etc and even fractions could be taught using toys. Awareness, Critical- thinking, problem solving, creative thinking, collaboration, co-operation, competency- equality can be incorporated through TBP.
    Colourful toys fascinate young minds- basic grammar concepts too can be covered using the toys.
    Science concepts- sound, light, materials can be included.
    Social – origin and history of toys of a place- materials used by the civilization can be covered using TBP.
