Course 9 Activity 6: Share Your Thoughts

To assess the child on number operations, a teacher frames a question paper at the end of the lesson with multiple choice questions only. Another teacher divides the concept of number operations into smaller sub-units and observes how the child responds to activities designed for each sub-unit. The teacher maintains a file of each child's sample work done in that unit in a portfolio and uses it to write the report looking at their portfolio. Which strategy would you like to adopt in your class and why?

  1. Teachers will assess what children know, understand and....

  3. Authentic assessment can be done by performance assessment, short investigation, simple quiz setting, open ended response, personal portfolios, journalising the progress, self assessment and multiple choice questions.

  4. Dividing the concept of numeric operations into smaller sub-units and observing how the child responds to activities is a better way for a child to understand. Quiz can be conducted at later stage just for revision purpose. but for basic understanding of concepts the smaller subunit method is better and advisable.

  11. I would like to opt for the second option as the division of topic into sub units and children 's response will help me know specifically about their understanding of the topic.

  12. I would go with the concept of second teacher as the first teacher is not focussing on the overall development of the child. But the latter will assess overall and comprehensive development of child.

  13. Maintaining a portfolio will help the teacher to have a record. Continuous follow-up of the misunderstood concepts at the earliest will ensure reinforcement of the correct process in the little mind. Further, the teacher can pay individual attention to the children who need better help in understanding the activities and scaffold them. Children with HOTS can be given tasks of higher understanding and an active learning environment can be maintained in the classroom.

  15. I want to adopt second startegy because portfolio is considered as a collection of student work representing their mathematical power, a showcase for a student work or a place where many types of assignments, projects, reports, and writing can be collected

  16. Much like an art portfolio, a mathematics portfolio represents a collection of a student's work intended to provide evidence of their understanding, and if collected over a period of time their growth in the subject.

  17. Division of the topics into subtopic is preferable. Portfolios will enable the teacher to focus on the difficulty areas and hence can be tackled with at the earliest.

Because with the help of this, we can know in which area the student needs to learn more and we can help him. as well as I can see how much his learning ability is developing due to our combined efforts and after knowing this I can help him better in future by developing his ability to learn.

  21. I would like to adapt the second one because when we divide the topic into subtopics then the child can easily assess in all aspects.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The method of multiple questions can be simple as all types of children will be studying in the classroom. Weak, moderate and more agile. Now, this type of assessment will greatly increase the child's IQ level.

  27. I would opt for the second method of assessment. I would divide the main concepts into smaller fragments or sub concepts and observe carefully how the learners are solving the problems, how and to what extent they are applying their knowledge, are they able to apply critical thinking skill or not. It will give me detailed report on their performance and taking remedial measures will be easier and more effective.

  30. Dividing the concept of numeric operations into smaller sub-units and observing how the child responds to activities is a better way for a child to understand. And maintaining portfolio help the teacher to know the learning gaps of children and work on those problems individually.

  31. Making questions from the chapter itself and perform those activities in class to make them underdstand more , and keep a report of each lesson so that we can compare how child's growth and understanding is growing

  32. The second option is better in my opinion than the first one.
But if I was given a choice then I would go for a continuous assessment.
I feel after completion of each and every topic assessment should be done.
Also during the class assessment is done.

  35. I would go for the second option because the division of topic into sub units and child 's response will help me to know about their understanding of specific topics and subtopics.

  36. Making the child subtraction using back counting

    ReplyDelete
  37. Assessment can be done by the performance assessment simple quiz setting multiple choice questions dividing the concept of number operations in two subunits and observe how the child responses to the given activities

  38. Dividing the concept of numeric operations into smaller sub-units and observing how the child responds to activities is a better way for a child to understand.coz by this way teacher can understand where child is making mistakes and teacher can explain individually to every child. Quiz can be conducted at later but for basic understanding of concepts the smaller subunit method is better

  39. I will prefer the continuous and comprehensive method of assessment as this will help the students to respond well and enable teachers to understand and assess students effectively.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I would do the way second teacher has done . Dividing the unit into smaller sub units and then maintaining a portfolio . so it can help me when I am making the final report card , looking at the progress and suggestions.

    ReplyDelete
  41. A continuous and comprehensive system of assessment can be adopted to give timely feedback to the child for further reinforcement.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I would like to adopt the method of dividing the topic into various sub units so that I can come to know about the level of understanding of the students and it will help me to find the weak areas of the students .Thus timely action can be taken to overcome the difficulties of the students.

  44. need to divide the number operations into sub units. This will help the teacher to get a better idea about the child knowledge , how the child has understood the topic and where the child needs improvement.

  46. dividing the concept of number operations into smaller sub-units and observing how the child responds to activities designed for each sub-unit.

  47. Maintaining a portfolio of child's performance is essential and would prefer doing so . Would divide the activities to smaller subunits and check their performance. This gives us the immediate feedback regarding students learning as well as our teaching. Which ever area needs rectification would immediately be done so.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Teacher should take different types of assessment that helps to identifies as essential for understanding

    ReplyDelete
  49. Comprehensive and continuous assessment is always fruitful. would like to adopt second strategy as maintaining portfolio will help in tracking the progress of the learner.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I would prefer second option that is dividing the concept into smaller sub- units and assessing the child for each sub- unit as this would clearly show how much child is learning and at which stage or sub- concept, the child is lagging behind. Thus, dividing the concepts into smaller sub- concepts and observing the child's learning accordingly is a better way.

    ReplyDelete
  51. portfolio method- whey you do any task , you understand in a better way, with all the steps in the mind in correct order. If one selects the multiple choice questions - you may or may the correct answer, some how one will find the correct option by elimination of the choices, but it will not have the guarantee that the student had understood the concept in detail.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I think second option is more suitable for children for better understanding. It will help them to acquire more knowledge in that particular topic.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Continuous assessment is any time better than full topic test

    ReplyDelete
  54. I would prefer the second way of assessing the child as it helps a teacher to focus on his weak areas.

  56. I would like to choose the second option

    ReplyDelete
  57. I would like to prefer 2nd option.

  58. Dividing into smaller units and assessing is definitely better. It would show hitches if any faced by the child. And a picture of his/her progress is captured.

    ReplyDelete
  59. By taking assessment on sub-topics and maintaining a portfolio, the teacher may have to spend lot of time and efforts but in return will get a detailed knowledge about the student's understanding of the lessons and wherever needed can work on it.Portfolio of each child will also help to keep a trach of their records

    ReplyDelete
  60. I would assess the child on his reaction on the various sub topics as it gives me a picture of the progress of the child from unit to another. The hiccups that the child faces as per the activities would also be highlighted.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Second method is good as it will help child to improve

    ReplyDelete
  62. I would like to try out the second teacher's steps as it would help to compare the child's progress against her own previous attempts and show a true picture of her learning.

  65. I would like to adopt the method of the second teacher. Though usage of a portfolio in providing samples of child's work and feedback aids in the process, the learning becomes progressive when it is divided into chunks aiding remediation whenever recovered.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I would like to follow the second teacher

    ReplyDelete
  67. i would prefer to go with the second teacher as the method assesses the learner better and also helps to identify any gap in learning
