 How is the language spoken by the children in your class in their day-to-day lives different from the language that is used in the textbooks? Please explain with the help of an example in about 100 words. Share your Thoughts.

  2. Language spoken by children might be different from language used in textbooks. Children speak their mother tongue while textbooks are either in English, national language i.e Hindi or regional language. Every child in the class might not be speaking the national or the regional language as his or her mother tongue. English is all together a foreign language.

Children speak their mother tongue while textbooks are either in English, the national language, or the regional language. Every child in the class might not be speaking the national or the regional language as his or her mother tongue. English is altogether a foreign language.

  6. Engage children in listening exercises. We often forget that language is both receptive and expressive. Make sure that children don't just mimic words and learn to say things. It is essential that children are listening, receiving accurately and processing effectively what they hear. Introduce exercises where children are asked to repeat back what they heard you say (you will often be amazed at how varied and inaccurate their interpretations can be). Have children relate key elements of a story or an activity. And emphasize to children the importance of listening to their conversation buddies.

  7. Our textbooks are in English language and many children from my school come from the background where parents are not educated and their mother tongue is hindi. So to make them understand what we are teaching them we have to explain in hindi first and gradually taking some of the keywords of English we come to English language. It takes time, but it is the only way a child learns and build up his confidence towards learning more of English language.

  8. The textbooks are in English whereas the students speak with each other in various other languages. They have difficulties in reading, speaking and understanding concepts that are in English because it is an unfamiliar language. Concepts explained in their mother tongue becomes relatable. For example, if a student speaks in Nepali at home but has to constantly read and communicate in English at school, it becomes quite challenging for the student because no one else speaks in Nepali in her school. Being the only one, she might be scolded and bullied by others and called dumb because she has difficulties in understanding whereas the real problem is in the difference of languages. She might be very smart but due to the language barrier, she faces these challenges.

  10. Children in my class likes to communicate in their mother tongue.But as we teachers communicate in English they are trying to answer in English itself.But in between we should give them much space for them .

  11. Medium of instruction differs for different schools. And it plays a major role in teaching learning process.

    Most of the public, private schools are English medium. And most of the parents wants their child to study in English medium without understanding the importance of language in learning. And English turns out to be a foreign language.

    As to develop child into a divergent thinker it becomes necessary to be multilingual, but early stages of development can only take place with the use of child's mother tongue.

    It is great that NIPUN mission has taken into account the very important basic challenges which teachers were facing since years.

  14. The language in textbook is different from the language the children usually speak, at least in the primary stage. Their comprehension is limited, critical thinking is not happening. Active participation in classroom doesn't happen.

  15. In many cases mother tongue is different than the language in the textbook. Children are familiar with their mother tongue at home but it's difficult for them to understand the textbook language .

  19. The language that is used by the kids at their initial learning stage is completely different from the language used in the books. They try to cope up with the stuff taught with those books and most of the time they also get confused. For ex- Sound of letter C & K are same but the letters are different.

The first language that a child gets familiar to is its mother tongue.Without any proper formal training the child masters this language..learns to express itself.In it's neighbourhood,the child gets exposure to a variety of languages too.Within a short while the child playfully learns many languages.But while learning these languages there was no writing done. Unlike this, in school when the medium of language is English or the one which is not spoken at home ... initially the child may find it extremely difficult .So here the teacher's role is very important to guide the child at every step , make learning interesting and engaging .

  22. Teachers and students use language to communicate each other to present tasks, engage in learning process ect. Educational programs for young children often emphasize curriculum and instruction to facilitate language learning. In primary level most children will use bilingual language which is easy to communicate with each other. Text book language helps the children to learn more and new vocabulary.

  23. Let the students settled down in the class. students are coming from different background's many parents are not educated and their mother tongue is Marathi. So making them to understand what we are going to teach them, we teachers explain in Marathi or Hindi. To help out the child in such situation is really great help for them so that students will learn more and more and educate himself. I really appreciate for this topic wherein we found a root cause to workout the same.

  24. I think the difficulty comes only when we start asking them to write in the medium of instruction. Speaking is imbibed through auditory senses and majority of the parents in our school are either third or fourth generation learners who are multilingual, so speaking in English is not much of an issue for our primary learners.

  25. a change in language leads to a change in the terms or words of that language. 1 word may have 2 different meanings in 2 different languages although they are spelt and read the same way.

  26. When learners use their home language to learn another language, their understanding and performance is likely to improve. Being able to move between two languages lessens the cognitive load (the brain having to do too many tasks at once) and lets learners explain what they know and can do.

    The medium of instruction of the school is different from the language spoken by the child. However, language immersion / bilingualism is followed to facilitate learning .
    Example, if a child speaks the statelanguage and the text book is in English, th attempt is made by the facilitator to impart learning in the languge spoken by the child aided by language immersion wherein the teacher explains and speaks out the language to imart a concept in which the child sees the language spoken by the teacher- eg., for the word BIG, the teacher explains the meaning of the word in state language, the teacher writes and shows the language to the child and explains the meaning of this word is 'bada' facilitating language immersion.

  33. There could be a significant difference in the language spoken by children and the language used in textbooks. Children speak their mother tongue while textbooks are either in English, national language i.e Hindi or regional language. Also even if the textbook might be in the mother tongue of the child, it is likely that the dialect the child uses at home might be different.
